A process for the preparation of halomethylated 2-phenylpropionic acid derivatives of general formula (III) (wherein X is halogeno; and R is hydrogen or lower alkyl) characterized by reacting a halomethylated styrene of general formula (I) (wherein X is as defined above) with carbon monoxide and a compound of general formula (II): R-OH (wherein R is as defined above) in the presence of a palladium catalyst.
