The method involves using a mobile telephone (6) which communicates with a network via a receiver station (3) and a first satellite (5). A second satellite (4) could also be used for communication. The S/N ratio in the first satellite communication channel (5A) is measured, as well as the S/N ratio which would apply if the path (4A) through the second satellite were used. If a reception fault is detected along the first communication path, communications are switched to the second path through the second satellite.
