An examination/inspection lamp comprising a light source 5 and a light guide 1 having a large end 2, a small end 3 and an intermediate convergent region between these ends for conveying light from emitted by the source form the large end 2 to the small end 3 and means to reduce the amount of light escaping laterally. The light guide 1 may be solid with a highly polished exterior, it may be silvered externally. The light guide 1 may be hollow, preferably with a silvered internal surface. The means to prevent light escaping laterally may comprise a sleeve 6 positioned adjacent the external surface of the light guide. The large end 2 of the light guide 1 may be convex. The lamp may be used for candling eggs or inspection of the ear or throat.
