A plug and socket assembly for the extension of a guidewire 1 with an extension wire 2. The plug 5 is formed at the distal end 6 of the extension wire 2 and the socket 3 is formed at the proximal end 4 of the guidewire 1. Inside the socket 3 is a female conical screw thread 7 and outside the plug 5 is a conical male screw thread 8.
