Display unit and methods of displaying an image

The method controls the ratio of transmission optical density to reflective optical density at any area of an image graphic by using computer software and printing the image on a substrate. The image is displayed having a light restricting silhouette pattern with several transparent or translucent areas. One design layer has one or more colours and is visible from one side of the display device and less visible from the other. The image is transparent or translucent as viewed from the other side. A definition of the design layer is provided to the computer to generate a computerised version of the layer which it outputs to the display and subdivides it into several second discrete transparent or translucent areas and other areas. The modified layer and the silhouette pattern are displayed with the first and second transparent areas being in register.
