PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid crystal display element possible to have a wide visibility angle characteristic and a high transmittance, and to be driven by a low voltage even if spaces between filament electrodes are made relatively narrow by providing a plurality of filament electrodes spaced within a specific range in parallel with each other and setting the thickness and refraction anisotropy of the liquid crystal layer within specific ranges. SOLUTION: A power is supplied to filament electrodes 12, 13 to generate an electric field, which controls orientation of liquid crystal molecules. This orientation controllability of the liquid crystal molecules enables the liquid crystal cells to shield transmitting liquid in a state without an impressed electric field, while the light passes through the liquid crystal cells in a state with an impressed electric field, therefore, the transmission light can be controlled according to NO or OFF of the electric field, and it is possible to take a display pattern called normally black by changing over a dark state to/from a bright state. And the space between the filament electrodes 12, 13 is desirable for a range of 5μm or more to 20μm or less, when a thickness of the liquid crystal layer is expressed by d and a refraction anisotropy by Δn, a value of Δnd is desirable to be in the range of 0.28 to 0.45. |
