PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as an antisterility vitamin, a hypolipidemic agent, a blood flow increasing agent, etc., by reacting trimethylhydroquinone with a phytol derivative or isophytol in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: The objective α-tocopherol of the formula II can be produced by the condensation reaction of trimethylhydroquinone of formula I with a phytol derivative or isophytol in the presence of a scandium complex (II) of the formula SC[N(CF3 SO2 )2 ]3 in a solvent (e.g. hexane) at a temperature between -20 deg. and the refluxing temperature of the solvent. The amount of the catalyst is 0.01-10,000mol% based on the compound of formula I and the system may be incorporated with a cocatalyst such as hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride. The phytol derivative is selected from phytyl halide, phytyl acetate, phytyl methanesulfonate, etc. The compound of formula II is useful also as an active oxygen scavenger, cellular senescence preventing agent, antioxidant, etc. The scandium complex (II) has excellent economical efficiency and handleability and is recyclable. |
