PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyester-base active hydrogen component which gives a polyester resin excellent in hydrolysis resistance, water repellency, etc., by selecting a specific polyester diol or polylactone diol. SOLUTION: A polyester-base active hydrogen component which is a polyester diol contg. 5-80wt.% 3-40C aliph. hydrocarbon side chains and having a number- average mol.wt. of 500-10,000 is obtd. by reacting a dicarboxylic acid with a diol component selected from among a 5-42C 1,2-alkanediol, a 6-43C glycerin monoalkyl ether, a 7-44C fatty acid monoglyceride, a diol obtd. by the addition reaction of a 2-4C alkylene oxide with one of the foregoing three diols, and a diol obtd. by the addition reaction of a 5-42Cα-olefin oxide with a compd. having two active hydrogen atoms. The active hydrogen component can also be obtd. by the addition reaction of a lactone monomer with the diol component.
