PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assist the reversion of a rack shaft to its straight-ahead position while limiting or minimizing the range of flaws formed on the outer periphery of the rack shaft, not impairing the sealing effect to a hydraulic pump for assisting the steering, and not damaging the teeth of a rack. SOLUTION: A rack shaft 1 is provided at its end part with a retainer part 11 which is smaller in diameter than the end part. A coil spring 3 is fitted around the retainer part 11 and is held pre-loaded between the step formed by the retainer part 11 and the end part, and a ball joint 5 mounted on the shaft end of the rack shaft 1. When the rack shaft 1 slides, the coil spring 3 at its forward end to a housing 2 butts against a part of the housing and is thereby compressed, to apply force to the rack shaft 1 in the opposite direction to the sliding for assisting the reversion of the rack shaft to its straight- ahead position. |
