The communication device has a receiver and/or transmitter unit, via which the device can communicate with other communication devices. An identification code is associated with each communication device. The device can access a data carrier (5) which contains the respective identification codes of several communication devices and the user can select an identification code. Preferably the selected code can then be made available for further processing e.g. for automatic dialling. The communication device may also have input means (3) to allow selection of the identification code and/or output means (4) for outputting the selection to the user. The selection may be stored in a memory in the communication device. Preferably the device is e.g. a telephone and the data carrier is e.g. a CD-ROM.
