The commutator (2) is mounted on an electrical machine shaft (1) and has a carrier sleeve (3) fitted on its outside with a number of lamellae or bars (4) which are separated from one another via slits (5), extending parallel to the longitudinal axis. The width of the slits is less at the base of the slits than at their open front ends, with the slit width decreasing continuously from the open front end. The slits may have a V- shaped or trapezoidal cross-section.
