The device has a feed device with adjustable drives (48) for adjusting a load-receiving platform (47) between a rest position and a receiving position in a plane perpendicular to an elevation guideway. Each adjustable drive can be independently acted upon. An overhanging length (51) between the location at rest and one of the remote receiving positions of the platform corresponds to double the length (42) or width of a palette (23). Each of two load-receiving means (45,46) are connected with their own drive device (35), and both are located to be guided along a common elevation guideway. Both means are also located on a common lifting carriage (34), adjustable on the guideway and connected to the drive device.
