The device (10) comprises a brake pedal (18) which remote from its step surface (20) has first link point (22) for pivotable connection in the vehicle. Between the first link point and the step surface is a second link point (24), intended for the rigid coupling with the entry member (26) of a main brake cylinder (28). An uncoupling device (30) is operable by a pyrotechnic gas generator and is intended for connection with a collision sensor and which when a heavy frontal collision occurs is released by the collision sensor. The brake pedal is then uncoupled either at its first link point from its linkage or at its second link point from the rigid connection with the entry member. The step surface of the brake pedal after this uncoupling is force-moved away from the driver.
