A horizontal capillary system filters rising water for release to lower drain an assembly to filter liquid, the filtrate is separated exploiting the capillary force. The filter comprises: (a) a passage extends upwards discharging the filtrate; (b) access to the filter by unfiltered liquid is prevented from overhead; (c) the filter and capillary systems are a woven fabric (2); (d) the capillary system is also metallic and is electrically linked to the filtrate in the outlet (5); (e) the outlet gullies drain in a star pattern to the main outlet (5); (f) the filter assembly floats on a liquid bed; (g) a pump discharges filtrate from the main outlet (5) via a hose; and (h) the outlet gullies (1) are incorporated in a common base plate. A suitable assembly incorporates drainage gullies (1), a capillary material (2), a woven filter, (3) a ventilation passage (5) and a filtrate collection channel (5).
