The method involves performing periodic modulation of the optical resonator length about a central position, continuously varying the central position over a defined range and simultaneously measuring the radiation intensity. The intensity detector (2) output is fed to a frequency selective measurement component (3) set to the modulation frequency or an integral multiple of the modulation frequency. The component output is displayed depending on the central position over a defined range. The frequency selective component output is used to set and maintain the central position.
