The proposal is for a process for monitoring the right of access in a radio receiver. In the process, specific data on a telephone card (70) inserted into the receiver, which serves in particular to allocate a call number to a telephone system and/or to provide entitlement to the use of network services via the telephone system, are read out in the radio receiver. The right of access to the telephone card (70) is checked by means of the data read out by comparing them or data derived therefrom with the data stored in the entitlement list stored in the receiver. The operation of the radio receiver is permitted only if there is a correspondence to the data in the entitlement list. In addition, a radio receiver is proposed which makes it possible to monitor the right of access and has a slot (25) to accept an access entitlement card (70). A device (30) in the card slot (25) detects card-specific data on the access entitlement card (70) which are compared in an evaluation unit (5) with data on an entitlement list contained in a store (10). In the event of access entitlement, a control system (1) connected to the evaluation unit (5) activates the operation of the radio receiver.
