Hydraulic steering servo for motor vehicle

The steering servo (14) is connected to the end of the steering rack and has two hydraulic connections (16,18). Pressure sensors (20,22) are fitted close to the connections to monitor the pressures generated by the steering movements. The servo control switches off the servo pump if there are no steering movements ie. if the steering is set dead centre. The servo control switches off the pump below a threshold pressure on the sensors. Above this threshold value the pump is activated. The pump power can be regulated via a variable threshold curve to increase servo power with demand.
