The invention concerns an orthesis, made of flexible material, for immobilizing the thumb base joint, the orthesis having a strap extending round the wrist and a tubular extension piece holding the thumb. The extension piece contains a sheath-like reinforcement with a cut-out extending across the inside of the base joint and has a slit running across the outside of the thumb near the base joint, the length of the slit being such that, when the base joint is bent, the slit opens, the extent to which the slit opens is restricted by a flap which extends from near the far end of the extension piece, passing over the slit, to the wrist strap and which is attached to the wrist strap.
