Pilot ejection from an aircraft normally concentrates the acceleration forces on the vertebrae in the chest region. The present system modifies this force by dividing it onto the chest and the abdomen. This is achieved by locking the torso in tension by tensioning the harness vertically in the top part of the seat back. Simultaneously there is a controlled relative sinking of the buttock support. This retraction of the seat is by only a few centimetres. The general principle of dividing the masses between the upper part of the body, the head and chest (1), and the lower part, the abdomen (2) is achieved by activating the harness tensioners (3) integral with the seat back. This introduces a partial lifting of the pilot's upper body mass during ejection initiation. Simultaneously the buttocks support (4) is lowered in the seat frame (5) subjected to the ejection pressure.
