The appliance has two reference electrodes (3,5) positioned in a tube (2) isolated from one another by a compartment wall (9). One or two pH electrodes can be provided isolated from the two reference electrodes or redox electrode which can be of platinum. Further combinations can be a pH electrode and a conductivity measurement cell isolated from the reference electrodes or a temperature sensor in the tube. Tube and wall can be of glass, plastic or ceramic material and the wall can be formed by a second tube concentric with the first.
