The occupant protection device comprises of at least one folded together expandable airbag, an outlet (14) for the unfurling airbag, as well as a covering (12) that is firmly held by a latch (16) in the outlet's locking position. Release of the latch is achieved via the operation of at least one accelerated inertial mass (20;18a,18b) on the covering and/or on the latch. The inertial mass may operate on the covering which may be built as a shade (62). The latch may be built as a magnetic latch and comprise of a permanent magnetic element (54) and a ferro-magnetic holder element (58). It may move, if a prescribed wheel slip of the vehicle is overshot, via the inertial force of the inertial mass.
