The switch rail has a hollow profile with a hollow chamber extending along its full length which is deflected elastically upon application of an external force, to bring a pair of spaced contact walls (8,10) into contact with one another for providing a switch signal. The switch rail is provided with a termination at one end having a pair of contact thorns (12,13) projecting outwards in opposite directions for contacting the opposing contact walls of the hollow chamber, the pointed end of each thorn penetrating the latter.
