A ball lock (1) for a device for returning balls for cleaning pipes of fluid, preferably water-operated cooling systems used e.g. in heat exchangers, power station condensers, refrigerating and air conditioning systems, etc., comprises a casing (2) subdivided into an upper (5) and a lower (6) chamber, an opening (4) between the chambers being closable and openable by means of a movable flap (16). To reduce the costs for drives and controls of the ball lock and the lines connected thereto the ball lock flap (16) is so constructed and arranged and is freely pivotably mounted by the water flow between the open and closed positions, that the flap (16), if a pump (10) is switched on in a bypass line (9) leading from the upper (5) to the lower (6) chamber, assumes its closed position and assumes its open position if the pump (10) is switched off.
