The process for working up used brake fluid comprises: (a)pre-cleaning the fluid with water and removing the lighter phase, in which the water content in the mixture is /-25%, preferably 40%; (b) removing the residual cloudiness of the lower phase in a coalescing separator with subsequent phase separation or filtering over a suitable filter, preferably active charcoal filter; (c) reprocessing the residue remaining after removing the water added according to the known process (European Patent 0468078); and (d) deionising the pre-cleaned fluid with strongly acidic or weakly basic ion exchanger before or after removing the water added, and after adjusting the boron content, removing the water and directly reusing after adding new inhibitors.
