A sphygmomanometer capable of judging systolic and diastolic pressures with high accuracy and comprising a cuff (10) which is applied to the upper arm (16) of an examinee and into which the air is blown to compress the artery, an optical distance sensor (12) which is opposed to the cuff (10) to detect the variation of the arterial pulsation, a digital data processing section (14) which judges the systolic and diastolic pressures of the examinee according to the photoelectric plethysmographic signals sent by the sensor (12), and a display section (38) which displays the systolic and diastolic pressures judged in the processing section (14). In the processing section (14), the point where the plethysmographic signal disappears when the pressure within the cuff (10) is increased at a constant rate is judged to correspond to the systolic pressure, while the point where a level part appears in the plethysmographic signal or a point near that point is judged to correspond to diastolic pressure.
