A chuck (15) for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft includes a body (20) and a primary gripping mechanism utilizing a three-jaw assembly (60, 65) actuated by a nut (80) driven by a sleeve (90). The chuck (15) includes a supplemental tightening mechanism. The supplemental tightening mechanism includes at least one L-shaped lever (100) having a portion (102) disposed between the nut (80) and nose section (25) of the body (20) of the chuck (15). The nut (80) can include a passage (84) through which the lever (100) passes. The lever bar (100) will push off a hardened washer (120) disposed against the body (20) and thus force the nut (80) forward to produce an enhanced gripping force on the tool through the jaws (65). The supplemental tightening mechanism can further include a detent (77, 87) to restrain relative rotation between the nut (80) and the sleeve (90). The detent (77, 87) can include a groove (87) formed in the nut (80) and a resilient retaining clip (77) held by the sleeve (90) to selectively engage the groove.
