This invention provides a method of recognizing a normal channel or a harmonic related carrier (HRC) channel by checking an automatic fine tuning (AFT) voltage when detecting a synchronous signal by scanning a channel. This method includes the steps of determining if a synchronous signal is detected through a selected channel; producing reference tuning data and HRC tuning data to tune all the channels by recognizing the currently-selected channel as an HRC one if the synchronous signal is not detected; producing reference tuning data by checking the AFT voltage output from the tuner and recognizing the currently selected channel as a normal channel if the synchronous signal is detected; and when the AFT voltage does not attain a given level, tuning the HRC channel, and if the channel's AFT voltage attains the level, recognizing it as HRC channel, and if not so, recognizing it as a normal channel.
