A coating material contains an emulsion copolymer (I) comprising the following monomers: (A) 0-60 wt.% aromatic vinyl cpd.; (B) 40-95 wt.% 1-10C alkyl (meth)acrylate; (C) 5-40 wt.% alkenyl nitrile; (D) 0-10 wt.% ethylenic unsatd. acid; and (E) 0-20 wt.% additional monomers. (I) is a mixt. of≥2 polymers, or an emulsion copolymer prepd. via≥2 steps, in which one polymer or step comprising 10-75 wt.% (I) contains≥90 wt.% of (C). Also claimed are (i) the emulsion copolymer (I), (ii) the prepn. of paper coated with the material, and (iii) papers coated with the material.
