A single end knot-tying machine has a central head with an annular body (20) divided into sectors and with a circumferential rotary wheel (19) positioned and driven in a seat by pinions. A thread spool (14) support is engaged by a pin (16) or pair of orthogonal pins in the wheel and the pins are coaxially engaged with axial sliders (17) operating alternately. The body is coupled to clamps or restraints which act on thread to hold it longitudinally against objects (6) being tied as the spool is indexed around an object. Pref. an object is advanced through a tubular duct (1) formed by pairs of members (2) and the thread is held against its sides while being secured.
