Homogeneous interlocking modular elements, to realize wall or floor coverings

A wall facing panel or paving slab, moulded e.g. from reconstituted stone to give the appearance of real stones with mortar joints between, is made in a basic square shape (M) with projections (1b) on two of its edges lying perpendicular to one another and matching recesses in the other two (1c). The edges of the panels or slabs which make contact with one another are angled or chamfered in the same direction to give a closer fit. In a variant of the design, e.g. for angled or curved wall surfaces, the panels can be made from a non-breakable material such as a mixture of natural aggregate and synthetic resin so they can bend to shape. After laying, the joints between panels or slabs can be pointed to give a continuous appearance.
