<p>A lap piecing operation in a combing machine is carried out by preparing a trailing end on an outgoing lap, preparing a leading end on an incoming lap, superposing the prepared ends to join them and feeding the ends so joined to the combing unit. A prepared end of lap from old roll is formed by stopping roller 202 while driving rollers 228, 230 to separate the lap, the distance between rollers 202 and rollers 228 and 230 being longer than the longest fibre in the lap to prepare the fibre bearing end. The severed prepared end is held between rollers 228, 230 and combing unit (roll 208, cushion plate 206). The remaining on old roll is removed, e.g. by suction nozzle 234 and a new roll is replaced. Suction is applied to end of new lap located between roller 202 and pressure roll 232 to remove fibres not firmly held by roller 202 and roll 232 thereby preparing the lap end. The new lap is moved down (roller 228 is preferably moved to dashed line position) until it lies on the prepared end on lap of old roll still threaded with rollers 228, 230 and nipper assembly to join the ends. <IMAGE></p> |
