The invention discloses a plate (1) made of an edible substance to constitute a layer of a dish comprising several layers of edible substance comprising substantially flat first and second main surfaces, characterised in that the plate comprises several cavities (2, 2', 2'') in at least one of its main surfaces. The cavities (2, 2', 2'') are designed to receive the supplementary ingredients of which the correct amount is ensured by the number and volume of the cavities and the uniform distribution is guaranteed by the distribution of the cavities. When the plate is used in the preparation of a dish to be cut up and the cavities of the plate are filled with a liquid, such as a sauce, this liquid will spread over the edges of the cut up portions in the plate. The invention also discloses methods for preparing a dish comprising several layers of edible stuff consisting in supplying a plate (1) provided with cavities (2, 2', 2'') in at least one of its main surfaces.
