A deflected Septum seal access port permits fluid addition and waste or product removal from a vessel 1 while maintaining an inert or reactive gas atmosphere within the vessel 1. Typically, the septum seal access port comprises a cap 4 having a centrally located hole covered by a septum sheet 8 through which the ingress and egress of materials to and from the vessel 1 are facilitated, a sipper tube 6 having an internal frit or filter 7 which extends downwardly from the cap 4, wherein the cap 4 further comprises a vent hole 11 to allow escape of the gas from the vessel and an inlet port 10 which permits the introduction of the gas. The cap 4 may be provided with a pipetting means stop (13, Fig. 1B) which may be positioned to limit the travel of a pipetting means (2, Fig. 1B) into the vessel 1 such that the Septum sheet 8 is pressed between the stop (13) and the top of the sipper tube 15 upon insertion of the pipetting means (2) therein, so as to form a seal between the pipetting means (2) and the sipper tube 6. Preferably, the sipper tube 6 functions as a mixing means, wherein the sipper tube 6 may be inserted through a ball bearing (20, Fig. 3) at the top of the vessel 1 or may be plunger-shaped (27, Fig. 6) to operate with vertical motion relative to the vessel 1. Alternatively, a coated ferro-magnetic tube (22, Fig. 3) may be placed around the sipper tube 6 to impart a force thereon via magnetic coupling to a moving magnet (23, Fig. 3) outside the vessel 1.
|
