Medicinal compositions for treating liver diseases containing erythropoietin as the active ingredient, which decreases the excessive iron ions in the livers of mammalians with liver diseases to thereby improve the liver function of the mammalians. These medicinal compositions make it possible to decrease the excessive iron ions in the livers of the mammalians, which makes them efficacious in the treatment of chronic hepatitis, liver cancer, hepatic cirrhosis, etc. caused by the excessive iron ions. The combination of the administration of these medicinal compositions with the exsanguination treatment makes it possible to prevent anemia accompanying exsanguination and promotes the excretion of the excessive iron ions from liver cells. In the case of patients with chronic hepatitis C on which the IFN treatment exerts no effect, moreover, it is expected that the administration of the above compositions followed by the known IFN treatment might exert therapeutic effects.
