A pipe coupling (20) includes a retainer (9) having spring fingers (36) that extend inwardly of the inner periphery of the coupling (20), and which are cammed outwardly by a pipe (24) when inserted into the coupling (20), the spring fingers (9) then returning to their original position under the stored spring force for them to snap into a groove (38) in the pipe (24) exterior, and thus provide a positive stop preventing withdrawal of the pipe (24) axially of the coupling (20).
