An airbag housing in an instrument panel 22 includes a lid 24 the border of which has a hinged section 24a and a frangible section 24b and further includes a reinforcing member 25 surrounding the border. The frangible section may surround three sides of a rectangular lid with the hinged section on the fourth side. An airbag 23 may be mounted close to said lid, which airbag may deploy to break said frangible section in order to open the lid (fig 2b). The frangible section and/or the hinged section may be formed by grooves in the instrument panel, preferably on the inside surface. The reinforcing member may provide a flange 25d to guide an inflating airbag through the lid opening. Preferably the lid is formed from a single injection moulded resin layer. |
