The leaves are transported along a processing track, being aligned in a first operation in the travel direction. In a second operation they are compressed at right angles to this direction to form a packet, and in a third they are cut, also at right angles to this direction. In the second operation, the leaves are compressed into a small cross-section at right angles to the transport direction. The maximum nerve length of the leaf nerves obtained after cutting in the third operation is a function of this cross-section. Compression can be such that the cross-section is at least nearly equal to the maximum possible nerve length. A large number of packets can be formed simultaneously in the second operation.
