PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the charging efficiency while keeping the uniformity of AC charge to negative charge by setting the duty cycle of an AC signal applied to a corona wire to a prescribed value. SOLUTION: An AC charger 10 has a corona wire 12, a grid 14, and a plastic shell 16. A photoconductive material 20 is formed of a photosensitive layer 22, a grounded conductive layer 25 and a base material 23, and a conductive floor electrode 21 is arranged between the shell 16 and the corona wire 12 and connected to a power source 30. A power source 40 holds the voltage of the grid 14 to a predetermined potential, and a variable duty cycle electrode 50 generates a high voltage AC signal to be applied to the corona wire 12. In this case, the duty cycle of the ac signal to be applied to the wire 12 is set larger than about 50% and smaller than about 90% regardless of the polarity of charge. Thus, the effective impedance and cross truck ununiformity can be reduced to improve the performance of the AC corona charger.
