<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a decoder to cope with wider application by using a circuit in common for encoding and decoding so as to conduct decoding with high image quality and simple encoding by means of a small circuit scale. SOLUTION: An encode/decode changeover circuit 11 gives a control signal to a switch 5, a subtraction addition common use circuit 6, a DCT and an inverse DCT circuit 7, a quantization and an inverse quantization circuit 8, a Huffman coding and decoding circuit 9, and a buffer memory 10 so as to switch encoding mode and a decoding mode. At the time of the encoding, orthogonal transformation is conducted and at the time of decoding, an inverse orthogonal transformation is conducted, and in the case of encoding, variable length coding and at the time of decoding, the decoding is conducted. Furthermore, frame memories 17, 18 are provided to store an input image at the time of encoding and to store a reproduced image at the time of decoding, prediction is conducted by referencing the stored image and a the time of encode mode, simple encoding mode is conducted in which the input image itself is used for the reference image.</p> |
