PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the detection of a background area except for a traveling object as the traveling object and to reduce the deterioration of the detecting sensitivity of the traveling object. SOLUTION: This traveling object detecting method image-pickup-processes environment including the traveling object to be detected, makes it a video signal (an image pickup processing step 101) and smooths the picked up video signal to output as an input image (a low-pass filter processing step 102). Next, this method generates an edge image from the smoothed input image (an edge extraction processing step 103). Next the device generates an edge storing image from the edge image and a past traveling object detecting result (edge image storing processing step 104), generates a background edge image from the edge image and an edge storing image (background edge extraction processing step 105) and then detects the area of the traveling object from the input image and the background edge image (traveling object detection processing step 106). Thereby, the edge area of the background is extracted to lower the sensitivity of detecting the traveling object only in this area. |
