Guide system for the fabric workpiece in an automatic sewing machine comprises an adjustment unit (10) which is held (7) permanently in contact with the fabric at a contact point (12) at right angles to the presser foot (5). The system operates on a perpendicular plane to the needle plate (4) at the contact point (12) including the direction of the peripheral speed of the adjustment unit at the contact point with the needle plate, giving an angle ( alpha ) which is not zero between them, parallel to the line (18) of material feed.
