A non-volatile cache mechanism (97) connected to a bus (64) connected for conducting write/flush addresses and data from a host computer (10) to mass storage devices (16) and to a volatile cache (56) wherein each write operation includes a write address and at least one data word. The non-volatile cache mechanism (97) includes a non-volatile memory (97) constructed of a plurality of sub-memories (100A-100D) having overlapping read/write cycles for storing the data words, a cache control responsive to the write operations for writing with receipt of the data words into the volatile cache (56), and a cache index (106) for storing index entries (108) relating write/flush addresses of current write/flush operations on the bus (64) with corresponding storage addresses of the data words in the non-volatile memory (97).
