<p>A device and a method for use in a sewing machine fitted with a bearing plate and a presser foot (5) for feeding the material being sewn, said foot being connected to a needle with at least one member (10) for adjusting the transverse position of the material, and contacted with the material at a contact point (12) which is offset sideways from the material feed line (18), located, in use, in a position substantially perpendicular to the presser foot (5), and arranged at a non-zero angle to said feed line.
