Position error signal measurement method in magnetic hard disc drive

The method involves measuring the width of a disc track, for two adjacent tracks in a system where magnetic heads 12 access several hard discs in a stack. The head output signals are received by a pre-amplifier 16, and the pre-amplifier outputs are processed by a read write circuit 18. The data signals are handled by a disc data controller (DDC) 20 that acts as a communication interface between a primary computer system and a disc drive micro controller 24. A function of the micro controller is to measure the track width based upon signals from the heads and then to apply commands to the head positioning servo controller 28.
