Multi-coat painting, especially for cars

A process for applying multilayer lacquer coatings onto an electrically conductive substrate by electrophoretic deposition of a primer, firing the primer layer, applying a coloured and/or decorative basis lacquer layer and applying a clear lacquer layer - uses an aqueous basis lacquer applied directly onto the fired primer layer and containing a binder that comprises the following components: (A) 50-85 wt.% one or more hydride binders chosen from polyesters (A1) or (meth)acrylate copolymers (A2) with hydroxy values of 100-350 mg KOH/g and acid values of 20-60 mg KOH/g; (B) 0-20 wt.% one or more binders different to those described in (A) ; and (C) 15-50 wt.% one or more optionally capped polyisocyanates and/or at least one triazine component which can crosslink with (A) to form ether and/or ester groups. At least 50 wt.% of (A2) is prepared in the presence of at least 20 wt.% (A1).
