A display panel system comprises a display panel (20) having a back side and a front side. Sunlight (72) is transmitted through a window (60) surrounding the display panel (20) and is reflected by a parabolic mirrored surface (66) towards a lens system (64). The lens system (64) focuses the reflected sunlight (76) and directs the focused light (78) towards the back side of the display panel (20) to provide backlighting for the display panel (20). The backlighting enables the front side of the display panel (20) to be viewed with improved contrast. The display panel (20) may be of the liquid crystal display (LCD) type.
