Rapid determination of DNA or RNA in aqueous solutions comprises determining the ultraviolet light (UV) absorption characteristics of nucleic acids at 254 nm. The process compares the shadow formed by a DNA droplet on a UV-illuminated fluorescing plate, with that formed by test strips. From this comparison, the concentration of the nucleic acid solution is determined.
