To process a signal (s(t)), particularly to recognize discontinuity, an orthogonal imaginary signal (s(t)) is first formed based on signal ((s)t). Then, a transformational step follows upon which a differentiation step follows. Processed in this way, the signal (s(t)) shows the discontinuity especially clearly, so that it can be selected and detected. Preferred applications of this process and the devices which operate according to it are telecommunications technology and signal processing in grids, especially in low, high, and medium tension technology.
