For a piston engine with a hypocycloid piston stroke gear with Watt guide, especially with pistons in opposed cylinders, where the gear is fitted to rotate on the journal of a crankshaft and comprises a co-rotating stroke and guide eccentric, in order to minimise transverse deviations of the stroke and guide eccentric from the piston travel, it is proposed that a most comparable run (20) in relation to the transverse deviations DELTA qH of the stroke eccentric be achieved by means of a run (21) of the guide eccentric obtained via parameters of the Watt guide with maximum transverse deviations DELTA qF up to and including the reversal point of the guide eccentric or the Watt connecting rod guiding it.
