Since an image pickup device is made to pick up the image of a travelling object (2) transferred along a transfer passage (1) during the effective exposure period corresponding to the pulse width of trigger pulse signals TRIG-IN generated from a pulse width variably setting circuit (5) by detecting the object (2) with a position sensor (3) and generating the signals TRIG-IN having a pulse width variably set by circuit (5) based on the detected output of the sensor (3), and then, supplying modulated synchronous signals TG-VD and TG-HD having reference timing which is made coincident with the trailing edge of the trigger pulse signal generated in accordance with the signals TRIG-IN and a shutter control signal SHCLTL having reference timing which is made coincident with the leading edge of the signals TRIG-IN to a CCD camera (10), the image pickup device can be synchronized to synchronous signals having a random period and can continuously and variably control a wide-range exposure period.
